Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium) is an evergreen shrub that can grow up to 1 m high. Its young shoots have pinkish-gray bark, while older ones have brownish-gray bark with longitudinal stripes. The leaves are compound and pinnate, with 5-9 leaves reaching up to 15-20 cm in length. The plant produces small, light yellow flowers with a lemon tint, each around 8 mm in diameter, arranged in multi-flowered panicles or racemes. The bluish-black berries are oblong-elliptical, measuring 10 mm long and 8 mm wide. The seeds are oblong, chestnut-colored, shiny, and measure 4.5 mm in length, 2.3 mm in width, and 1.5 mm in thickness.
